We are pursuing technicians who are energetic, proactive, team focused and have a strong interest in working in a dynamic educational setting that provides a compassionate environment for animals and their families while providing the most advanced care possible. Our Nursing Care Unit Technicians provides excellent patient care for all services in the Companion Animal Hospital including Emergency and Critical Care, Surgery, Internal medicine, Oncology, Cardiology and Neurology. Primary responsibilities include, monitoring patient status using a variety of equipment along with hands on assessment, administering medications (including controlled substances and chemotherapy), intravenous infusion therapies, providing nutritional support and oxygen as requested by clinician all over shift, veno-punture for the placement of intravenous catheters, blood sampling and administration of drugs, monitoring and maintaining various indwelling tubes including tracheostomy, chest and feeding and a variety of catheters including intravenous (multi-lumen, central, peripheral) urinary and arterial.

All LVT's will maintain hospital policies and follow guidelines provided, assist with the instruction and support for the veterinary students, maintain equipment, order appropriate supplies, stock treatment rooms, clean clinical area and instruments as well as other tasks related to providing a clean and safe environment for all patients. Develop and maintain excellent working relationships and professionalism within the Companion Animal Hospital, including team members, students, other service technicians, staff, clinicians and clients. Cross-training with other units in the Companion Animal Hospital may be required as time permits. As part of an academic teaching hospital, the Licensed Veterinary Technicians will work with faculty/staff to implement clinical investigations, including data collection and/or collaborate with other service clinicians/staff on clinical investigations conducted within the CUHA.

The Cornell University Hospital for Animals provides 24-hour care for pets 365 days of the year. The schedule for this position requires flexibility to insure that adequate patient care and service needs are provided without interruption or exception. Schedule will include evening, overnight, weekend and holiday shifts.

Required Appropriate qualifications: Associates degree in Veterinary Technology, NYS licensure or eligible to be licensed required with at least 1-2 years significant practice in a hospital setting. Must be able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, demanding environment and have the capability to multi-task with competing deadlines, while paying close attention to details. Will need to work independently as well as in a team environment, while demonstrating a high level of initiative, exceptional judgment and critical thinking expertise. Must demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching both students and house agents. Develop and maintain excellent working relationships including communicating and resolving conflicts with staff, students, technicians, veterinarians and clients in a professional manner at all times. Must have a commitment to on-going career development and skill building. Expected to use basic computer program to retrieve information and med-select system for procuring supplies. Excellent organizational expertise essential. Candidate must have the capability to meet the physical demands of the position, which includes, but not limited to, stressful situations, prolonged standing and kneeling, as well as lifting and restraining patients that may weigh over 50lbs. Rabies immunizations are required and cost is covered by the department.

Preferred Appropriate qualifications: 3-5 years practice as an LVT in an emergency/ specialty practice and/or university environment. Demonstrates the capability to provide advanced nursing care to critically ill patients. capability to use multiple types of monitoring equipment to include ECG, pulse oximeter, end tidal CO2, ventilator set-up.
