Primary Purpose of Department
The mission of the Department of Anthropology is to expand the frontiers of expertise through innovative programs of research, and graduate and undergraduate education that take advantage of anthropology's inherent interdisciplinary nature. We are a community of social and biological scientists comprised of full-time and part-time faculty, graduate and undergraduate students who explore diverse aspects of the four fields of Anthropology. Faculty interact with students to convey the concepts and research skills needed to understand the intertwined natural and cultural heritage of the human species and the full range of forces that shape contemporary ways of life, so that they can work toward creating fuller lives for themselves and a better world for all.
We offer a B.A. in Anthropology, and a B.A. in Anthropology with a concentration in Applied Anthropology. At the graduate level, we offer two tracks leading to the M.A. in Anthropology. The General Anthropology Track involves a research thesis. The Applied Anthropology track involves an applied research report.

Description of Work
Responsible for the everyday operation of the department and the department programs. The Department Chair/ Director will promote excellence in department programs within the University. Chair/ Director responsibilities are classified as professional tasks requiring leadership abilities and mentoring of faculty, administrative skills to include vision, long term and short-term planning, decision-making and coordination of instruction.
Essential tasks and Responsibilities
Required Appropriate qualifications: Tenured rank in the UNC Charlotte Department of Anthropology; a PhD in Anthropology or related field from an accredited institution; an exemplary record of publication, teaching, and service, appropriate to rank; and capcapability of strong leadership abilities in undergraduate/graduate education and in research, including the capability to facilitate faculty efforts at seeking external grant support. The candidate should also demonstrate a commitment to promoting diversity and equity as values in the department and college.
Minimum practice/Education
UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.
Preferred Education, Skills and practice
Desired Appropriate qualifications: Previous administrative practice; the capability to work with interdisciplinary programs and centers; potential as a strong advocate for the department at the College and University levels; practice mentoring faculty and graduate students; and a commitment to advancing the University's outreach mission.
